Fighting Mesothelioma

Do You Know If You Work And Play Around Asbestos?

In the 1960s, workers began receiving news about the dangers of working around asbestos and the devastating cancer called Mesothelioma that it can produced in the lungs and other internal organs. This cancer of the cells most frequently found along the lining of the lungs is still extremely deadly today. Also, in spite efforts by law enforcers, workers are not always notified of their potential exposure to free-flying or contained asbestos at the workplace.

The average person may be aware of only a few products that contain asbestos and these occur primarily in industrial settings. Asbestos has excellent thermal properties and is frequently used in pipe coverings and ceiling tiles. What most people don't realize is that since asbestos does have such wonderful insulating properties, it is sometimes woven into fabrics to provide extra insulation. It is this fiber form of asbestos that is the most dangerous because it can become airborne and be inhaled. Other products that contain hazardous forms of asbestos are roofing felt, pipe wrap, vinyl-asbestos floor tile and millboard.

While the United States is attempting to ban many products that incorporate the dangerous form of asbestos, many other countries - such as Canada and Mexico - continue to produce and import into the U.S. asbestos-laden products, including fabrics. Also, in spite current efforts to eradicate asbestos products from many schools and homes that were built prior to and during the 1970s, testing of these older schools and homes is still showing dangerously high levels of asbestos in the air.

Once asbestos is airborne, your chances of getting an asbestos disease like Mesothelioma are greatly increased.
Unfortunately, this disease's signs and symptoms don't appear overnight. It takes some time for the mesothelium, a protective membrane or sac that coats the outside of your internal organs. The most common mesothelium cells that become cancerous as result of inhaling asbestos are associated with the lungs. The next location that can develop Mesothelioma is the outer tissue of the abdomen.

Even though this cancer doesn't limit itself to only one age group, most Mesothelioma diagnoses occur between 30 to 50 years after encountering asbestos. Since outward symptoms start by resembling lesser threatening signs such as persistent coughing, blocked bowels, or fever, diagnosis is best left to further investigation by a doctor. Depending the type of Mesothelioma, other symptoms may include shortness of breath, weight loss, chest pain, blood clotting, stomach pain and swelling, and heart palpitations.

Mesothelioma typically attacks the lungs, causing pleural Mesothelioma. Peritoneal Mesothelioma attacks the outer lining of the stomach and pericardial Mesothelioma affects the area around the heart.

Surgical intervention is routinely used to treat Mesothelioma. This involves removal of the cancerous portions of the affected organ. Surgery is typically followed by chemotherapy or radiation. Mesothelioma must be treated aggressively because many people die within six months without aggressive long-term treatment.
